I'm trying to lose weight, so I'm drinking protein shakes for breakfast. Is this a good choice? I've heard pros and cons.

Maria Patino, Lake County, IL

Protein (meal replacement) shakes are perfectly fine, and for some people, the convenience of having the same shake for breakfast every day makes dieting mindless and less of a hassle. If you do decide to go this route, it's simple enough to make your own shake in a blender instead of buying a premade version. You get to control what goes in (for example, adding fresh produce gives you fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals) and what doesn't (packaged shakes can contain preservatives, sugar or corn syrup, and unnecessary added vitamins and minerals). Here's the recipe for my Protein Power Smoothie. It's perfect for breakfast or lunch: It has plenty of filling protein to curb your appetite, plus colorful frozen berries for fiber, vitamins, minerals and natural sweetness.

Joy's Protein Power Smoothie
305 cal, 31 g protein
¾ cup milk (skim, soy, or almond)
½ banana
½ cup frozen raspberries
½ cup frozen blueberries
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder (may sub soy/rice/pea protein)
5 ice cubes

I'm confused about how much fish oil should be in my fish oil supplement.

Lorna Stapula, Allendale, MI

Fish oil capsules contain a blend of different types of fatty acids. You want to zero in on the total amount of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, not the total amount of fish oil. If you don't eat fish, I recommend a daily combined dose of 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA to protect your heart and overall health. Read the label closely and add up the EPA and DHA counts; you usually have to take more than one pill to reach 1,000 mg. (Talk to your doctor before taking fish oil, since it can interact negatively with some medications or conditions.)

How do I pick a healthy butter substitute spread? I'm confused by all of the choices at the grocery store.

Dawn McLean, Riverview, FL

The most important thing: Choose one that's trans fat–free. On the Nutrition Facts panel under Total Fat, be sure it says Trans fat 0 g; also, there should be no partially hydrogenated oils in the ingredients list. If a product has less than 0.5 g trans fat per serving, manufacturers can round down to 0 g, even though the product may have some partially hydrogenated oils.

Also check calories and saturated fat. Choose spreads with no more than 2 g sat fat per serving. If you're watching your weight, choose a "light" one, which has about half the calories and fat of the regular types. If you have high cholesterol, consider spreads with plant stenols or sterols, which can help lower cholesterol. Crave the taste of real butter? Try whipped butter. It's butter made with lots of air, which cuts sat fat and calories. Still, it has 3.5 g sat fat per serving, so use it in small amounts.

Joy's Healthy Spreads
All of these have 0 g trans fat and are free of partially hydrogenated oils. For 1 Tbsp:

Brummel & Brown Spread Made with Yogurt
45 cal, 5 g fat, 1.5 g sat fat
The nonfat yogurt (10%) gives this spread a creamy texture.

Promise Light
45 cal, 5 g fat, 1 g sat fat
Good source of omega-3 fats from soybean and canola.

Smart Balance HeartRight Light
50 cal, 5 g fat, 1.5 g sat fat
Made with plant stenols, as well as EPA and DHA.

Land O'Lakes Whipped Butter 50 cal, 6 g fat, 3.5 g sat fat
Half the calories and 45% less fat than regular butter.

Decks And Outdoor Living Spaces

Decks And Outdoor Living Spaces

Your deck should be your own personal outdoor oasis, and a lack of privacy can throw off the whole vibe. Whether you're dealing with neighbors in close proximity, traffic noise, or an unsightly view, these deck privacy ideas offer simple solutions for a more secluded outdoor space. Turn your deck or patio into a private, relaxing retreat with these easy projects and tips.

1 of 18

Create the Lush Look

Credit: Keller and Keller Photography Inc

Ideal for warm-winter climates, leafy tropical plants can create almost instant privacy. However, even gardeners in the North can enjoy these fast-growing, big-leaf plants. Grow them as houseplants and move them in and out each season, or treat them as exotic annuals.

Add a Wall

A privacy fence is one of the most common ways to block a view. Here, a simple fence caps off a backyard retreat, providing a perfect, secluded gathering space. A series of container gardens soften the deck, making it even more inviting.

Plant Trees

A few small trees dotted around the edge of your deck create a soft, leafy curtain without taking up too much space in the yard. Add drama and interest by selecting different types of trees. Small maples (such as Amur maple), for example, provide bold fall colors, while crabapples offer springtime blooms.

Split the View

If blocking the view of your entire deck isn't possible, then work on a section of it. Here, a vegetable garden and grasses create a beautiful focal point that draws your eye away from the more visible deck areas behind it. Planting the garden so close to the stairs also helps the deck feel more intimate and secluded.

Create a Canopy

A traditional awning offers protection from the blazing summer sun, as well as from the neighbors' second-floor windows. Awnings come in a range of styles and options, including retractable types that you can unroll whenever you want. Choose a fabric that complements your home and landscaping for a deck privacy idea that adds both style and function.

6 of 18

Add Height with Hedges

If building a fence isn't a possibility, create deck privacy with a border of tall hedges. Not only will they block views, but they also help tame high winds and buffer noise. Varieties like Juniper and Japanese Euonymus grow fast and respond well to pruning.

Mix and Match

Deck privacy solutions can include both store-bought and natural solutions. This outdoor family hangout benefits from a traditional white fence, a fireplace wall, and fetching container gardens at various heights. Tall trees surrounding the deck cloak the space in shade and block views of nearby neighbors.

Incorporate a Tree

Instead of clearing the ground when you add a deck, take advantage of what's already there. An old tree, for example, helps give the deck more privacy by creating a soft, natural canopy. Lush plantings around the edge of the deck also help it feel softer and more secluded.

Build a Trellis

Break up the line of sight by building a trellis on top of the deck railing. Although it won't offer complete privacy, a patterned wood trellis serves as a decorative element for your backyard and creates a sense of coziness. Plant shrubs or a hedge along the side of the deck to further block the view.

Supplement with an Umbrella

An umbrella might be all you need to bring a sense of privacy to your outdoor patio. Place the umbrella against an existing fence or shrubbery to extend the view-blocking capabilities. You can easily adjust the angle to better block the sun or protect from prying eyes.

Hang Outdoor Curtains

Hang curtains from your deck's pergola to instantly give your outdoor living space a more intimate feel. You can also pull them closed on warm summer days to help block the sun and keep you cool. Choose curtains in a sturdy outdoor fabric that will stand up well in all types of weather.

12 of 18

Use Your House

When deciding where to place a deck, look at the lines of your home. Some spots offer more privacy than others, so choose a corner or side of the house that's most out-of-the-way. Extending the roofline of this home over the deck helps the area look as if it's always been part of the landscape.

Add a Roof

A pergola can do triple duty for your deck. Beyond helping your space feel cozier, a pergola creates shade and adds interest. Enhance the structure with hanging baskets, planters, or light fixtures to turn your deck into an attractive living space.

Surround the Space

Combine a pergola and a trellis to section off your deck space. Even though this trellis doesn't completely block the view beyond, it provides enough protection to make the deck more enjoyable. Plant vines along the deck line and watch as they wind their way up the trellis over the seasons.

Embrace Vines

Vines are the ultimate plant for providing privacy. Here, a hearty vine forms a lush roof over this small deck. It also provides an extra privacy "wall" as it scrambles up the support posts and pergola.

17 of 18

Add the Sound of Water

Background noise from a busy street can be just as annoying as seeing your neighbor's weedy backyard. Solve this kind of problem by adding a fountain or other water feature to your deck. Even a gentle trickle of water can make a big difference in how much you enjoy your time outdoors.

18 of 18

Add a Touch of Fabric

Credit: GREG SCHIEDEMANN

Check out the wide variety of outdoor-friendly fabrics to create a DIY privacy screen. Sheets of fabric sewn like curtains and hung from curtain rods or wire are quick and easy to put together. Plus, they're inexpensive, so you can create a couple of different options to change out according to the season or your mood.

2017 Coastal Living Showhouse

2017 Coastal Living Showhouse

Blue and white dominate in Coastal Living's showstopping 2017 Idea House, and tile is no exception. This year's designer,Mark D. Sikes, was inspired by the coastal surroundings and made blue the main theme throughout the home. We talked to Mark about his classic and timeless style, his design process with the house and of course, tile...

Can you tell me a bit about yourself, what you do and your design firm?
I'm an interior design in Los Angeles. I also have a blog 'Mark D. Sikes- Chic People, Glamorous Places and Stylish Things' and I wrote the New York Times best selling book 'Beautiful'. We have designed furniture collections with Henredon and Soane Britain, fabrics with Schumacher and rugs with Merida. We are working on projects all across the United States--St. Louis, NYC, Nashville, Kansas City, Birmingham, Malibu, Napa, Montecito, and of course Los Angeles.

Next: A bit about Mark:
My style can be described as... Classic and timeless, but there's a California ease to it that makes it inviting and comfortable.
My design philosophy is... It's all in the details.
I got my start... When my own home was published and on the cover of House Beautiful in 2012
I find inspiration in... Everything beautiful.
I can't live without... Books and magazines.
My best design advice would be... It's all in the details.
I love tile because.... It adds texture and can help create mood for a space.

On to the project...

Can you tell me about this year's Coastal Living Showhouse? Is there a story behind the house you'd like to share?
The house is right on the water so I was inspired by the coastal lifestyle. I wanted to combine West Coast and East Coast spirits together.

How did you come up with your overall color scheme and design?
I was inspired by the views from the house, mostly by the water and the sky, so I chose the color blue as the main thread throughout the house. The entire house is blue and white- I wanted to tell the story of my favorite color and to show the range of blue. You truly can do so much with it.

The master bathroom earns its stripes with painted blue trim echoed by our White Wash hexagon and Aegean Sea floor tile:

Tile Shown: 2" Hexagons in Tusk with a 2x6 and 1x6 border in Aegean Sea

In terms of tile, what sort of look were you going for throughout the house?
Something simple and classic.

We love the pairing of the bold blue cabinetry and classic white tile. What made you go for 3x6 Subway over another size?
I like spaces to feel authentic, so this size of tile just felt right.

Tile Shown: 3x6 in White Wash

Tile Shown: 3x6 in White Wash

Thanks to designer Mark D. Sike's expert color blocking, the kitchen's upper white cabinetry and subway tile feel almost weightless in contrast to its rich royal blue foundation. The tile he chose is also a shape and color from our Foundations Collection, which is priced at $12/SF.

Most of the bathrooms in the showhouse are light and bright, can you tell us about the more moody Navy Blue bath?
The navy bath is downstairs. All the colors in this area of the house are a little darker and moodier. A navy bathroom felt like the right extension of this point of view and it felt like the right place to have a little fun.

Large Navy Blue Tile wainscoting offers a timeless anchor for playful accents like patterned wallpaper and abstract wall art.

Tile Shown: 6x12 in Navy Blue

You used a few of our sizes (2" and 4" Hexagons and Ogee) for the bathroom floors in the house, why do you like to use tile underfoot?
Mostly For function.

Tile Shown: Ogee in Tusk

On the third floor of the Coastal Living 2017 Idea House is a charming studio loft and adjoining bathroom featuring a floor of Ogee Tile in Tusk.

How did the installation process go? Did you face any challenges?
It went really well, no issues that I know of.

Lastly, which of our colors/shapes/patterns are you hoping to use on any future projects?
I'm a fan of the classics, I will use the white subway and hexagon shapes over and over. They just work and look beautiful in any space and with any designs.

Christmas Living Room No Tree

Christmas Living Room No Tree

Normally when I share my Christmas dining room here on the blog, the table is festively set as though guests are expected to walk in the door at any minute. Today, I'm showing what it looks like now when it's just hubby and me at home. A little bit of green and sparkles, but nothing over the top. (This post contains affiliate links – see my privacy policy.)

Christmas Dining Room in an 1875 House

I do like to keep the dining room subtly festive this month to keep myself in a Christmas spirit. But for some reason, when the Christmas trimmings come out, the kitties think I've created an ultimate playground for them to enjoy and decorations are found in strange places each morning.

This year, I kept the same tasseled runner on the table that was there through the fall season. I swapped out the cement bunnies for a collection of bottle brush and wooden trees. The chandelier gets the expected strand of garland that I wrap around the base. It takes just a few seconds to do this.

Christmas Dining Room in an 1875 House

The cats have already knocked the smallest bottle brush tree on the floor a few times already. They do it in the middle of the night when I can't see who did it, so no one gets in trouble. My Christmas tree is in the background creating a special glow. It looks lovely at night when the lights are reflected off the window behind it.

Bottle Brush and Wooden Christmas Trees on a Round Wood Platter

Here's a view from the other side of the Christmas tree centerpiece.

Bottle Brush and Wooden Christmas Trees on a Round Wood Platter

In years past I've set up an entire Christmas village on the console table. This year, in my quest to scale back, I simply put a wreath at the base of my snake plant, added my new, vintage amber pickling jar, and finished the far end with a few bottle brush trees. Bottle brush trees are a lifesaver when making holiday decorating as easy as possible. They're not expensive, and they look good no matter where you put them.

Dining room console table decorated for Christmas

The vintage mirror reflects the lights of the tree on the other side of the room, while my vintage amber pickling jar is filled with golden Christmas ornaments. The photo doesn't do the jar justice, and that decorating touch was a bit of an accident. While decorating my tree, I put some of the gold ornaments in the jar to keep them from rolling off the table before hanging them. I liked the way it looked and left them in the jar.

Amber pickling jar filled with gold Christmas ornaments

I kept the same, simplistic decorating philosophy when I turned my eye toward the dining buffet. It also has a snake plant with a wreath at the bottom of the pot, along with two other simple vignettes.

Dining room buffet decorated for the Christmas season

I had a stack of small, white ironstone oval plates in front of my vintage mirrors and love the look of their simplicity. So all I did to give it holiday cheer was to add a pair of light-up ceramic houses and a bit of greenery. Done! Well, the light in the smaller house isn't working so hubby needs to see if he can remedy that.

Light-up ceramic Christmas houses with a stack of white ironstone plates

My mini ornaments are cradled in a heart-shaped wooden bowl to finish off the buffet. It took me less than 5 minutes to decorate this area. In fact, it took more time digging the stuff out of the attic! But honestly, I wasn't looking for anything in particular. I just hauled out boxes with stuff I thought I might use and put the rest back (which was a lot).

Mini Christmas ornaments in a wooden heart bowl

On Saturday I'll share my sitting room, which looks into the dining room. It's what I'm featuring for my "cozy living" series that's held the first Saturday of each month with some blogging friends.

Modern Country Christmas Decorations in an 1875 House

I hope you enjoyed my quick and easy approach to my Christmas dining room when it's just hubby and me at home. If guests are coming for dinner, the table is set with a holiday theme. I'll soon share my Christmas tablescape because I'm excited about some new, inexpensive soup/salad bowls I found! It's the simple things in life that make us smile, right?
